Existen muchas variantes de la sinestesia: sinestesia con grafemas &gt; color, sonido &gt; color, y l\u00e9xico &gt; gusto, entre muchas otras. La primera describe al sujeto que asocia un color a un grafema determinado (letra o n\u00famero); en la segunda se asocia un color a un sonido determinado, y en la \u00faltima se produce un sabor en la lengua al escuchar un fonema o una palabra determinada. Nuestro inter\u00e9s aqu\u00ed se limita a las primeras dos variantes de este fen\u00f3meno, que ha sido categorizado por algunos como un trastorno y, por otros, como un don.<\/p>\n<p>Las personas que experimentan la sinestesia se denominan sinest\u00e9ticos, y existen distintos grados de intensidad del fen\u00f3meno de un sujeto al otro. El estudio de la sinestesia se remonta hasta la Antigua Grecia, cuando los fil\u00f3sofos trataron de comprender el color de la m\u00fasica (lo que actualmente se denomina timbre musical) y c\u00f3mo cuantificarlo. A fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del siglo XX se llevaron a cabo muchas investigaciones entusiastas sobre el tema, hasta que la aparici\u00f3n del conductismo dentro de la psicolog\u00eda torn\u00f3 al estudio de dichas experiencias subjetivas e internas un boleto para el olvido acad\u00e9mico. No obstante, desde la revoluci\u00f3n cognitiva de los a\u00f1os ochenta, han aparecido m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s estudios sobre la sinestesia, lo que trajo a la luz algunos descubrimientos excepcionales sobre <strong>el funcionamiento de la mente humana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lo que los sinest\u00e9ticos nos muestran al resto de nosotros es que el lenguaje puede ser m\u00e1s rico de lo que nos imaginamos; las asociaciones que una palabra o un sonido pueden tener realmente van mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los preconceptos convencionales que muchos ling\u00fcistas (escritores, traductores, etc.) se imponen a s\u00ed mismos y, en consecuencia, al resto de nosotros.
