En tant que traducteurs nous savons que la po\u00e9sie est l\u2019une des choses les plus difficiles qui soit \u00e0 traduire. La rime, la m\u00e9trique, la cadence, le choix des mots, le rythme : nous pouvons passer des semaines enti\u00e8res \u00e0 essayer de traduire un court po\u00e8me. Un po\u00e8me na\u00eet de la combinaison unique entre certains mots et il joue de la musique d\u2019un langage sp\u00e9cifique. Face \u00e0 ces caract\u00e9ristiques, comment devons-nous affronter la traduction d\u2019une po\u00e9sie ?<\/p>\n

Dans son texte \u201cAspects linguistiques de la traduction<\/em>\u201d, Roman Jakobson<\/a> affirme que la po\u00e9sie \u2013 par d\u00e9finition \u2013est intraduisible. \u00c0 l’heure de traduire un po\u00e8me, il nous faut plut\u00f4t oublier de traduire pour r\u00e9aliser une \u201cune transposition cr\u00e9ative\u201d. Burton Raffel a soutenu que la traduction de po\u00e9sie qui n\u2019est pas une po\u00e9sie \u201cnouvellement n\u00e9e\u201d, n\u2019est rien.<\/p>\n

Le po\u00e8me Seeing Things<\/em>, de Seamus Heany, constitue un exemple clair de la difficult\u00e9 de traduire de la po\u00e9sie. Il commence ainsi :<\/p>\n

Inishbofin on a Sunday morning.<\/em>
Sunlight, turfsmoke, seagulls, boatslip, diesel.<\/em>
One by one we were being handed down<\/em>
Into a boat that dipped and shilly-shalliied<\/em>
Fearsomely every time. We sat tight<\/em>
On short cross-benches, in nervous twos and threes,<\/em>
Obedient, newly close, nobody speaking<\/em>
Except the boatmen, as the gunwales sank<\/em>
And seemed they might ship water any minute.<\/em><\/p>\n

Voici par exemple la traduction de Patrick Hersant<\/a>,<\/p>\n

Inishbofin un dimanche matin.<\/em>
Soleil, fum\u00e9e de tourbe, mouettes, diesel, cales des navires.<\/em>
On nous aidait \u00e0 descendre l’un apr\u00e8s l’autre<\/em>
Sur une embarcation que chaque passager faisait tanguer<\/em>
Dans un vacillement sinistre, avant de nous serrer<\/em>
Sur les bancs de traverse, par petits groupes craintifs,<\/em>
Ob\u00e9issants et mal \u00e0 l’aise\u00a0; nul ne parlait que l’\u00e9quipage<\/em>
\u00c0 chaque immersion des plats-bords<\/em>
Qui semblaient pr\u00e8s de prendre l’eau.<\/em><\/p>\n

Comme nous pouvons l\u2019observer, la traduction de Hersant n\u2019est pas une copie conforme de l\u2019originale. Nonobstant, quand il s\u2019agit de po\u00e9sie, c\u2019est justement ce qu\u2019il convient de faire. Personnellement, il me semble que la traduction de Hersant est extr\u00eamement judicieuse. \u00c0 modifier jusqu\u2019au signes orthagraphiques, il parvient \u00e0 une nouvelle version du po\u00e8me : comme le dit Raffel, il l\u2019a recr\u00e9\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Cependant, une autre question fait surface : \u00e0 quel point la libert\u00e9 est \u00ab\u00a0trop de libert\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb ? En acceptant le fait que traduire de la po\u00e9sie est imposible et que, en tant que traducteurs, nous avons la responsabilit\u00e9 de r\u00e9aliser une nouvelle cr\u00e9ation, quelle est la limite… s\u2019il y en a une ?<\/p>\n
