Why Is It Necessary to Update Memories and Glossaries?

lupa-300x199It is very important to keep our regular customers pleased and satisfied with our translations. For this reason, one of the Project Manager or Coordinator’s tasks is to keep the customer’s memory updated and error-free. In this way, we will be preventing many headaches in the future.

Communication with the customer is a key element, and it is important to set translation parameters before starting the project in order to avoid negative feedback once it has been delivered. The customer should explain if there are words he wishes to preserve in the original language or whether he wants the text to be formal or informal.

In case the customer wants to use a specific vocabulary, it will be extremely helpful to prepare a glossary. This glossary should be compulsory reference material for translators, editors and copy editors who will take part in all the projects, and they should also follow the glossary closely and work within the parameters set by the client.

The advantage of working with a translation tool is that we can create memories by client or by field of knowledge. This gives translators an idea of what the text is aimed at and what kind of vocabulary the client prefers to use.

If we are going to translate a text which is very similar to what we have previously done for the customer, we should make sure that the translator has all the working and reference material necessary to work comfortably in order to prevent inconsistencies and incorrect translations.

Keeping an updated glossary, apart from a term base and a translation memory, will not only help make both the Project Manager’s and the translators’ job much lighter and easier, but will also keep the client happy, for he will receive completed files that are accurately translated and on time.
