Interesting Features in Trados 2009

Quickplace Function

This is a useful feature for translators because it allows us to use the format of the source text in the translation wherever necessary or include numbers, tags or other items. The procedure is simple: pressing the shortcut key Ctrl + comma opens a menu where you can choose the appropriate option (either a number, a tag or another element). If you want to apply formatting on a word or group of words, press Ctrl + comma again and the same menu opens with the available options (these options will always depend on the source segment, i.e. if the source text has words in bold and italics, you can choose between those two options). When used effectively, this tool greatly enhances productivity.

Quality Checker

Through this extremely interesting option in Trados 2009, we are able to set some parameters for the program to notify us of any mistakes or typos in our translation or revision.

A clear example is a case in which you are translating a document and for whatever reason you leave a segment empty (untranslated); automatically, when moving to the next segment, you will see a warning symbol next to the empty segment that tells us that something is wrong. If you hover over the symbol, it will quickly display a picture of the problem in question. This information is also available in the Messages tab at the top of the window of our Editor. If you click on it, a list of all error messages and warnings that have been generated over our translation appears. If you double click the items on this list, it will take you exactly to the segment(s) with error(s).

This function of Trados 2009 is extremely useful since these messages so visible right away, or for querying at the end of our translation, if that is how you prefer to work. I recommend always using the QA Checker tool to make absolutely sure that you have not forgotten any number or tag, or left any segment untranslated–it happens to the best of us!

To customize these control options check just go to the “Tools” menu from the top bar, click “Options” -> “Verification” -> “QA Checker 3.0” and find the different options for quality control that can be configured to our needs.
