Economic Importance of Bengali

The Bengali-speaking regions of South Asia have an active international trade sector, with Bangladesh being a major exporter of garments, textiles, leather goods, and jute products, and Kolkata, in India, is also a major hub for international trade.

The banking and finance sector is well-developed in Bangladesh, with many national and international banks and other financial institutions. While one of the oldest bourses in Asia, the Kolkata Stock Exchange, in India, also showcases this thriving finance sector.

Agriculture is a major trade sector in Bangladesh, growing rice, jute, tea, and sugarcane. With its long coastline and many rivers, fish and seafood are also important exports.

Bengali Across the World

Bengali speakers are located not only in Bangladesh and India, but also in Pakistan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, the UK, and the USA.

With over 230 million speakers, Bangla ranks seventh among the world’s most widely spoken languages.

Dating back to the XVIII century, the Bangladeshi diaspora today encompasses some thirteen million natives living outside their homeland. Close to three million live in the Middle East, and two million in India, while Banglatowns are home to vibrant communities in Western cities as diverse as Detroit and London.

Bengali: Sweet but Challenging

Known as Bangla to native speakers, Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in Bangladesh and three Indian states: West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam.

For English speakers, Bengali can be hard to master. Written from left to right, its roots lie in Sanskrit. This Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language tree has no capital letters, and its grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are challenging, yet many people―albeit subjectively―consider it to be a very “sweet” (endearing) language.
