Bustling Business Hub

A major commerce and trade center, Maharashtra State has a well-diversified economy. Traditional sectors (like agriculture and textiles) function smoothly alongside hi-tech activities that include information technology, biotechnology, and engineering.

Doing Business in Maharashtra

Among India’s wealthiest states, Maharashtra has a varied economy. Strategically located on the west coast of India, it offers easy access to the massive markets of western and southern India, through ports, airports, and roads. Its huge workforce is highly educated, with several top technical schools and universities churning out steady streams of graduates.
Many major financial institutions (including two stock exchanges) are located in the Maharashtra state capital. Known as India’s financial capital and largest metropolis, Mumbai is also a business and trade hub, with its port handling much of India’s international trade.
At over USD 400 billion, Maharashtra has the highest GDP of any state in India. This powerhouse economy is underpinned largely by agriculture (especially cotton, soybeans, and sugarcane) and industry (particularly automotive, textile, and engineering).
