Which Countries Accept an Apostille?

The Hague Apostille Convention has more than 120 contracting countries and territories, including Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, France, Germany, and China. An apostille is generally recognized by the other member countries, so you do not need a separate legalization for each one.

Membership changes over time. Check the current list of members in the Apostille Section of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) before you order.

Countries outside the Convention generally require legalization through their embassy or consulate instead. Ask the receiving authority which authentication it requires.

When Do People Request an Apostilled Translation?

Apostilled translations are commonly requested for:

  • Citizenship by descent and foreign residency applications, using birth, marriage, and other civil records
  • Marriage and civil registration in another country
  • Foreign university admission and recognition of academic credentials
  • Employment and business registration in another country
  • Court and legal proceedings in another country, including powers of attorney, affidavits, and contracts

Requirements vary by country and institution, so confirm what yours accepts before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate issued by a government authority that confirms the authenticity of a signature or seal on a document, so the document is recognized in other countries that belong to the Hague Apostille Convention. On a translation, the apostille authenticates the notary’s signature on the Certificate of Accuracy.

No. An apostille confirms that the notary’s signature on the document is genuine. The accuracy of a Trusted Translations translation is covered by the translator’s Certificate of Accuracy and Trusted Translations’ review process.

Trusted Translations charges $200 for the apostille, including the Florida Department of State fee. The translation is priced separately and starts at $19.90 per page, depending on the language, and notarization is at no extra cost.

Trusted Translations processes apostilles in two batches each week, on Monday and Friday. A notarized translation that is ready before 4 PM Eastern Time on a batch day goes into that day’s batch, and one that is ready after 4 PM goes into the next batch. Processing by the Florida Department of State then takes 3 to 5 business days. If you request physical copies, mailing usually takes 2 additional business days.

No. The 1-2 hour rush option from Trusted Translations applies to the certified translation only. The apostille is processed in weekly batches and by the Florida Department of State, so it takes longer.

An apostille is required when the receiving authority is in a country that belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention and asks for one. A notarized translation is enough for many U.S. institutions.

No. The apostille Trusted Translations obtains covers the notarized translation. If the receiving authority also requires an apostille on the original document, that apostille comes from the authority that issued or certified the original.

No. USCIS requires a certified translation and does not require an apostille. Apostilles are used for documents that will be presented in another country.

Countries outside the Convention generally require legalization through their embassy or consulate instead of an apostille. Confirm with the receiving authority which authentication it requires before ordering.
